Research Services

QFHS offers a research service to help members and non-members find ancestors and discover their family history.

Our team of volunteer researchers is a dedicated group of experienced family historians. They conduct research at a rate of $20 per hour, with all proceeds benefitting QFHS. Our researchers consult records in our library and check resources at outside centres.

Our primary area of research is Quebec family history.

Requests for research
There is a minimum fee of $20. Overpayments will be reimbursed. Before sending your cheque, please take note of the following estimated research hours.

Estimated research hours
Search for a place of birth, marriage or death 4 hours minimum
Search for a land record 10 hours minimum
Tracing a direct family line back to the first ancestor in Quebec About 8 to 10 hours

Research requests are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on the number of requests we receive, there is usually an eight-week wait. Some queries require in-depth research, while others can be answered quickly.

To search for a vital record in Quebec, such as birth, marriage or death, you must specify the religion, e.g., Catholic, Protestant, Jewish.

To submit your request, please fill in the Research Request form. Send the completed form and your payment to QFHS. Write “ATTN: Research” on the envelope. Since payment must accompany the request, email requests for research cannot be processed.

Printouts and photocopies
If you require printouts of fiche or microfilm entries or from a database or photocopies of pages from from one of our printed resources, we charge 50 cents per printout or photocopy. Please note that the minimum charge is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. For this service, you must provide the specific information, otherwise this is a resarch request and the charge is $20 per hour. Mail your request to QFHS.

Professional research
For extensive research help, you may wish to contract the services of a professional researcher who is willing to conduct research in archival centres outside our library. All arrangements must be made directly with the researcher. QFHS does not guarantee the researcher's qualifications or search results.
